(And who usually plans cruises anyway? I'm going with women in their 30s to 50s.) Apparently Carnival's Fun Ships aren't that fun. At least one analyst is guessing that Carnival's refusal to host the event is based on its family image and a desire to seem less interested in hooking up and partying than G-rated fun. "They want a fun, family experience on board and this type of business and the negative attention that they got as a result of it was disruptive," said Stewart Chiron, a Miami cruise expert. A cougar is roughly defined as older women (over the age of 40 or so called cougars) look for younger men (in their 20's or so) to meet and the idea is women find young men for "companionship" while the young men find a woman who has financial stability, among other things. "Carnival has done a great deal to distance themselves from being considered Spring Break USA," Stewart Chiron, a Miami cruise expert and chief executive of CruiseGuy.com, told ABC News. "They want a fun, family experience on board and this type of business and the negative attention that they got as a result of it was disruptive. They are not going to have any problem filling their cruise lines without this business."

While one can respect Carnival's family-friendly stance, I can't help but wonder why they agreed to the first cruise last month. I never heard of any negative attention -- or any attention -- the cruise may have gotten, so by denying the cruise organizers now, Carnival probably received more notoriety and attention than before. Carnival Cruise Lines' decision to drop any further International Cougar Cruises groups from its ships, after hosting the first group last month on the Carnival Elation, was curious.

Nonconformists of a different stripe, whose dogs all have fleas, will be sailing in just a couple weeks aboard the big Ukelele Cruise (/group_sites/uke10/index.shtml), departing January 24 aboard Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas. Running 7 nights round-trip from Los Angeles, the cruise visits Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta -- all places where the armadillo-shelled charango is definitely a more prevalent stringed instrument than the uke, but no matter. On board, uke fans can participate in classes, workshops, jam sessions, open mic sessions, and uke-themed parties, and take in some performances to boot. So maybe it's no surprise that the "cougar cruise" -- cruises where older women would be paired with eligible younger men -- has sailed into the sunset. After several years of putting together the event, organizers with the International Cougar Cruise finally canceled sailings in 2014, due to lack of interest. Thanks to the recent media frenzy surrounding the latest ABC drama, Cougar Town, cougars are officially making a comeback.

One of the more snarly cougars retorted that the cubs weren't exactly overwhelming in their Ashton-ness, either. After a day at sea, she quipped that her aspirations for the cruise had shifted. She just hoped to disembark with the names of a good plumber, drywaller and electrician. Instead, the second Cougar Cruise sailed aboard Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas in 2010 on a seven-night Mexican Riviera itinerary. It attracted fewer takers --20 or so cougars and 25 cubs -- likely because of the greater time and cost commitment, Thomas surmises. But during its heady, if short-lived, heyday in 2009, the Cougar Cruise was a publicity bonanza.

But now it appears that the cougars and cubs are going to need a new Love Boat. Jan. 12, 2010 — -- It looks like there will be no more love on the high seas for cougars, or at least on Carnival cruises. "A cougar is generally known as a woman over 40 who likes to date younger men, but theoretically any woman who dates younger men is a cougar," said Rich Gosse, who came up with the cougar cruise idea. Cougars and cubs interested in getting together on the high seas will have more chances to do so.

"There are more men to choose from, and they're of higher quality than dating an older man." The entire cougar experience happened over just a quick weekend. The cruise left San Diego Friday afternoon, went to Ensenada, Mexico, and was back in California by 8 a.m. Travel agents will often sell a block of rooms on a ship for a themed cruise. For instance, next month the Bellamy Brothers are hosting a 7-night country music Caribbean cruise.

Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Aren't Passing Up "Cougar Cruise"
And Manderino, too, advocates for cougar/cub love whether on land or at sea--though she prefers the phrase "intergenerational relationships." "When I saw The Graduate, I was 20 years old. And I identified with the daughter because she had choices," she mused. "I don't identify with Mrs. Robinson; I identify with Miss Robinson. And so does my generation." Even if single, older women don't want to self-identify as, cougars let alone go on the Cougar Cruise, Gosse encourages them to seek out younger men.

Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas will depart from Barcelona and cruise April 16-21, 2011. The new co-owner, Mimi Cassidy, says they still get several Cougar Cruise-related queries weekly, including "funny calls from young men describing their looks and saying they'd be great candidates for a hosted cruise," she says. I sailed with the cougar pack that year (strictly as a trained observer) on assignment. The brainstorm for the first Cougar Cruise came from Rich Gosse, a San Francisco Bay-area events promoter and founder of the Society of Single Professionals, billed as the world's largest nonprofit singles organization. In the summer of 2009, he convened a National Cougar Convention in Palo Alto, California.
I was on Elation back in September and there was a sizable Swingers group on board. The only incident I saw was when one of the women of the group wanted to sit around topless in the Serenity area. Security came over pretty quickly and told her she had to keep her top on. Hopefully Carnival will be as vigilant in enforcing the rules on your cruise as well. Well, except for the late 20s/early 30s man I rescued in the hallways wandering around with a huge gash on his arm, half naked, drunk off his tail and couldn't find his room.
More establishment conservative cruises are being offered this year by The Weekly Standard (/index.html) and The National Review (/index.html). On the left, a pair of liberal-themed cruises are being offered by The Nation (/index.html) and Air America (). Manderino ended up declining the young man's post-cruise marriage proposal. The Cougar Cruise arranges for the group to get together every night before dinner, followed by dancing. Gosse said there is also an "obligatory" annual hot tub party. While an average cruise often skews female, the Cougar Cruise draws slightly more men than women, said Rich Gosse, who runs CougarEvents.com and whose group The Society of Single Professionals sponsors the Cougar Cruise.
(If you’re still pondering what a Cougar is despite all the buzz, I suggest you head over to Urban Dictionary for an unofficial interpretation of the term). As the nation gears up for tonight’s series premier starring Courtney Cox, another group of middle-age women – and the young men that lust after them – are preparing to heat things up in the travel industry. That’s right – Carnival Cruise Line is hosting the very first International Cougar Cruise. Just when you thought it was safe to go back to sea, here they come again. The Cougar Cruise is back onboard Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas. Cougars (older women) and Cubs (younger men) will enjoy 6 days cruise from Tampa, Florida to the fun ports of Key West and Cozumel form December 8 to 13, 2012.
Inquiries from potential cruisers (including a number of would-be cubs with pumped-up egos who were under the mistaken assumption they'd be hosted by cougars with all expenses paid) flooded in. The 2 Carnival cruises I have been on had a lot less drinking than any RC cruise that I had been on. Setting sail in a few weeks is a singles event being marketed at the "World's First International Cougar Cruise." And no, there will be no zoo animals aboard. Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas will host a three-night cruise for older women looking to meet younger men as part of Cougarevents.com 7th annual Cougar cruise.
The fourth International Cougar Cruise will sail in the Mediterranean in April, just in time for International Cougar Week, March 27-April 2, 2011. Amy Luna Manderino, 44, will be one of those attending the nightly dancing and socializing on the trip. Crowned "Miss Cougar East Bay" in San Francisco, California, in September, she won the cruise as part of the event. Gosse partnered with Thomas, whose Singles Travel Company regularly organized singles' cruises, to set the concept afloat in December 2009.
"It's just a lot of cougars and cubs who get together and party 'til you drop," Gosse said. I dont think Carnival cares that much about banning them or keeping them too family friendly since I am stuck on a Swingers cruise that advertises "NAKED AND RECUPERATING" as one of their sea day activities. So that was kind of nuts, but aside from that, I didn't notice anything. And that could have happened on any ship, had nothing to do with the so called cougar cruise. Crew Center is website run by ex-crew members sharing their experience and Insights about life and work on cruise ships. You can also read the Latest Cruise News, Download Ship Itinerary, or take peak at the Crew Galleries.
Since Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, who haven't crafted their image for families with children, will also be benefiting from Carnival's decision with a full ship in the midst of a recession. No offense, says Carnival, but "We are no longer allowing any groups to be booked and marketed under this theme on our ships." "When you're single, you always wish the person meets someone they want to be with. If this is something they want, then I wish them well," Thomas said. There is even an ABC sitcom called "Cougar Town" that glamorizes the sexual escapades of a 40-something divorcee on a search for self-discovery by dating younger men. These cougars may as well be an endangered species compared with those hunting them on this cruise. Whether you cruise multiple times per year or you're new to cruising, the goal of Royal Caribbean Blog is for it to be a useful resource for keeping up to date with what's new and exciting with Royal Caribbean.
"Eventually, (interest) dies down. But the first one was phenomenal. I had to hire another full-time staff person just to handle the calls. It was a million-dollar (publicity) hit. Then it just all kind of fizzled." I'm booked on this cruise and called that website and the parent company said they went out of business which is why it's not fully chartered out any more. You'd think Carnival would like anything that packs their ships with partying people -- so something MUST have gone on that made the group a liability. To top it off – the reigning queen of the cougar craze, Gloria Navarro, will be presiding over the event. She’s been riding high after being crowned the first ever Miss Cougar America at the Cougar Convention this past August, but Courtney Cox may steal her thunder once the show is aired. It’s too bad they can’t get a camera crew on this cruise, because it might make for some quality entertainment.
