(WBTV/Gray News) — Four law enforcement officers were killed, and four others were wounded while trying to serve an arrest warrant in a neighborhood in Charlotte. We must do more to protect our law enforcement officers. That means funding them - so they have the resources they need to do their jobs and keep us safe. And it means taking additional action to combat the scourge of gun violence. Leaders in Congress need to step up so that we ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, require safe storage of guns, and pass universal background checks and a national red flag law. Elliott was one of four law enforcement officers killed Monday as they attempted to serve a warrant at a home in east Charlotte.

They are heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harm’s way to protect us. We mourn for them and their loved ones.

‘Gunfire galore’: Officers used witness’s home during east Charlotte shootout

Two people, a woman and a 17-year-old male, were taken to the police station as persons of interest. Police also say a high-powered rifle was seized from the home. Wilson described the scene as “gunfire galore,” with officers army-crawling through his backyard, hiding behind trees, and jumping around bushes. Wilson said the people who lived in the home involved in the incident had lived there for “a year and change” but otherwise didn’t know them. They occasionally had backyard parties, Wilson said. At one point, Wilson said he saw one officer dragged through his home by his shoulders.

Princess Charlotte Crying at Queen Elizabeth's Funeral Has Social Media in Tears

did charlotte cry at funeral

More than a year before Elizabeth’s death, her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, was laid to rest in April 2021 at age 99. The princess, aged seven, was comforted by her mother, the now Princess of Wales, after the service at Westminster Abbey seemingly got too much for her. The brothers, who were without their spouses, stood in quiet reflection around their grandmother for a quarter of an hour to pay their respects.

Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral takes place at Westminster Abbey

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles stood at the pulpit of Little Rock A.M.E. Zion Church addressing a room of about 50 gathered for a prayer vigil the day after four law enforcement officers, including three on a U.S. Marshals Task Force, were killed and four other officers were injured in a shootout at a suburban home in east Charlotte. The suspect who fired at officers was fatally shot on the lawn of the house, while two other people inside the home were later taken in for questioning. Armed with a "high-powered rifle," Hughes fired upon the approaching task force officers, striking several of them, police said.

Prince George, Princess Charlotte share sweet moment at Queen Elizabeth’s funeral

Though the decline in officer deaths is a "welcome trend," National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund CEO Bill Alexander previously told USA TODAY he's concerned about an increase in nonfatal shootings. In 2010, he served six months in prison after he was convicted on a felony breaking and entering charge related to an incident that occurred the year before, according to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. Police then began negotiations with other people in the home before authorities eventually sieged the house with armored vehicles. A semi-automatic AR-15 rifle, a .40-caliber handgun and additional magazines and ammunition for the weapons were found at the scene. "Our challenge to this community is take make sure that 3-year-old son grows up knowing his dad," Lyles said.

"We remember them, we honor their service, we send our deepest condolences to their families and friends, and we pray for healing for all affected by this tragic incident." Marshals Task Force attempted to serve a warrant for firearm possession by a convicted felon. During a Monday evening press briefing, authorities said the recipient of the warrant was the one who initially opened fire. That suspect, who was later identified as 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes, Jr., was killed in the shootout, police said.

The publication noted that Charlotte was seen exiting Westminster Abbey, where the Queen's funeral took place, on Monday. She appeared to wipe tears away from her eyes while surrounded by other family members including her mother, Kate Middleton, and older brother, Prince George. ET did note that Charlotte appeared to be in better spirits after this moment. But, it's clear that this was a hard day for many members of the royal family. Following the memorial service, the late monarch’s coffin was marched to Wellington Arch by members of the royal family including King Charles III, Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Princess Anne.

Charlotte and George joined Kate and Camilla, the Queen Consort in a car that rode behind the procession of the queen's coffin from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch. Charlotte, who wore a touching horseshoe brooch, gifted to her by the queen, was seen visibly upset as she wiped her eyes outside of the church in London, England. It is unknown what moment in the service prompted Charlotte's emotional display, as she appeared to be in better spirits shortly after. Princess Charlotte got emotional during her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral service Monday. Elizabeth's parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, were also buried there. After a committal service, the queen will be laid to rest next to her husband.

Royal fans took to Twitter to praise the royal pair for their bravery, while others said they had been in tears watching the pair walk behind their beloved great grandmother's coffin. Charlotte had a special bond with her great-grandmother, and paid tribute to her on Monday by wearing a diamond horseshoe brooch on her coat, a symbol of her and the Queen’s shared love of horses and animals. It's easy to forget that the young royals had their own, unique relationships with the late monarch. More details will be released as they become available, including funeral arrangements for the fallen officers. Statesville Police announced that one of the four other officers injured was among their own, Cpl. Casey Hoover, a U.S. Hoover was shot in his upper torso but is expected to make a full recovery, according to police.

The 4 officers killed in North Carolina were tough but kind and loved their jobs, friends say

Princess Charlotte, 7, joined her family members in honoring the life of Queen Elizabeth II during Her Majesty’s official funeral on Sept. 19. Charlotte joined her brother, Prince George, as well as her parents, Prince William and Kate Middleton, and other Royal Family members, for the official event. Charlotte looked all grown up for the somber event, channeling her mom in a black coat, while also wearing a black hat atop her head (Kate wore a similar look). She walked into the funeral alongside Kate and George, while Prince William marched behind The Queen’s coffin.

Princess Charlotte bursts into tears as she says goodbye to the Queen

As Entertainment Tonight reported, Princess Charlotte even appeared to get emotional at one point during the event, leading royal fans to Twitter to share their own thoughts about the solemn day. Eventually, Mr. Hughes left the house, armed with a firearm, and was fatally shot by officers near the front yard, the police said. In addition to the four officers who were killed, four others suffered injuries that were not life threatening.

"They are heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harm’s way to protect us," the president said in a statement. "We mourn for them and their loved ones. And we pray for the recoveries of the courageous officers who were wounded." President Joe Biden on Monday released a statement calling the officers "heroes" and saying he and first lady Jill Biden will be praying for the families and the recovering officers. The president also spoke with Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles to express his condolences and support for the community. Chhoeun said he watched as one officer and then another was hit by gunfire from the rear of the brick home, and heard the frantic calls for assistance.

King Charles III stood by during the moments of farewell, and appeared teary-eyed. The young royals solemnly stood with their mother and Sophie, Countess of Wessex following the funeral service. Charlotte attended the service alongside her older brother, Prince George, and parents.

Tuesday afternoon, she stood in front of the damaged house and marveled at the destruction. And she wondered aloud if the gunman had been sneaking around the upstairs of his house, shooting down at police officers from multiple locations. Two women were brought in for questioning after they exited the house, the police department said in a statement.

During the service, Charlotte was well-behaved, singing along to the hymns that were played in honor of The Queen. Kate kept a close watch of Charlotte and George throughout the day, as William had to take part in some separate Royal duties at certain parts of the proceedings. "She was by my side at my happiest moments. And she was by my side during the saddest days of my life," he continued.

"His dad was a law enforcement officer, he was a hero, he was someone that we should be proud to know and speak of." "We are forever indebted to Officer Eyer for his bravery and ultimate sacrifice," CMPD posted Monday evening. Princess Charlotte often goes viral after official Royal events, due to her big personality that she isn’t afraid to show in public. Charlotte was front and center during Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in June, and cameras caught her scolding younger brother, Prince Louis, for waving to the crowd as the family rode in a carriage.

The Princess of Wales also held the young royal’s hand as they walked into the church. Princes William and Harry walked side by side, though the Duke of Sussex was in a morning suit rather than a military uniform because he is not a working royal. King Charles III led blood family members, including Elizabeth's other children—Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Princess Anne. Her youngest brother, Prince Louis, 4, stayed at home for the somber occasion. William and Kate decided he was too young to handle the intense emotion of the service, in which a lone bagpipe player captured the historic moment's sadness.

Following Wednesday’s vote on LGBTQ+ clergy, church members broke out into song, cheers and hugs, per videos shared on social media. Mr. Renfroe is attending the meeting in Charlotte but says that given the outcome, he will leave the denomination within the next month. He cautioned that many denominations that have moved in the direction that Methodists have taken this week have seen their numbers dramatically decline. “This is certainly the lightning rod issue, the presenting issue, but our division goes so much deeper,” said Rob Renfroe, the president of Good News, a traditionalist caucus within the United Methodist Church. He described sexuality as a proxy issue for larger debates in the church about the authority of the Bible, the reality of sin and beliefs about salvation. Wednesday’s vote follows years of turmoil in the denomination over sexuality, an issue that has prompted tumultuous debates and schisms in other Christian traditions and institutions.

Bishop Tracy Smith Malone, the incoming president of United Methodist Council of Bishops, said the vote sends a clear signal that the United Methodist Church is ready to embrace a new way forward. One of the architects of the plan, Rev. Dee Stickley-Minor, said she looks forward to being part of a denomination in which the United States isn't the center of gravity. Haworth said he hopes conference delegates will make it financially easier to exit UMC. Glen Haworth, lead pastor of the Fount church in Fountain Valley, California, said the fragmented church is reminiscent of the period before the Civil War when the country and the church were split over slavery.

In 2022, Church appeared as "Mushroom" on the third series of The Masked Singer and finished in second place. The third single to be released from the album, "Snow" was released on 11 April 2011. Church appeared on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross on 13 March 2010, where she confirmed that she had already begun writing and recording her sixth studio album. Church also stated that the album was of a different sound to previous ones, more mature with a "kooky" vibe. Magazine,[15] discussing her life since having her second child.

Almost exactly five years ago, when the denomination tightened enforcement of its ban against gay clergy, he had broken into sobs while he was serving communion. In addition to two other petitions aimed at removing anti-LGBTQ+ restrictions, the UMC General Conference approved as part of a consent calendar an amended policy that previously barred “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” from ordination. The three petitions that received swift approval early Wednesday followed nine other LGBTQ+ inclusion-related petitions the 700-plus delegates approved on Tuesday. “I know I’m called to ministry and know I’m called to be here,” Cox said in an interview. The decision to remove the ban on LGBTQ+ ordination is “an affirmation of the call by our official policies,” Cox said. Conservatives were given an exit ramp when Methodist leaders opened a window in 2019 for congregations to leave over “reasons of conscience,” in most cases allowing them to keep their property and assets if they received approval to depart by the end of last year.

On the floor of the meeting after the vote on Wednesday morning, the mood was equally jubilant. “The energy that’s gone into preparing for and trying to get to this moment can now be refocused,” said Jan Lawrence, the executive director of Reconciling Ministries Network, a group that advocates for full inclusion in the church. “We have a huge opportunity in front of us.” Ms. Lawrence noted that not only were all the group’s goals for the meetings likely to be achieved, but they were doing so in at atmosphere that was notably agreeable, even joyful.

Acting and television career

For Ohio pastor Rev. Angie Cox, there are immediate and tangible implications with the newly lifted ban on ordaining LGBTQ+ clergy. Cox, a lesbian and married, has sought to take the first step toward UMC ordination, called commissioning, six times in the past five years. Each time, the West Ohio Conference’s board of ordained ministry has rejected her candidacy. Still to come later this week are votes on the core of the bans on LGBTQ clergy and same-sex marriage in church law and policy, which may draw more debate. However, the large majority achieved by Tuesday’s votes indicate the tenor of the General Conference.

In 2019, a special General Conference was called outside the normal four-year cycle for only the second time in UMC’s history. There, delegates chose not to lift the church’s opposition to same-sex marriage, but also opened a window for congregations to leave the church amid ongoing disagreements. As many congregations across the country defied church restrictions forbidding same-sex marriage, thousands of conservative congregations began to leave, opening the door for more LGBTQ-friendly policies to be passed at this year’s conference. The policy allowing churches to disaffiliate, often called Paragraph 2553, received approval in 2019 and expired in 2023. But the official language of the policy remained in the denomination’s compendium of policies and practices.

More than 7,600 congregations, or about 25%, have broken off from the larger church in the past several years over disputes about LGBTQ rights and inclusivity, such as same-sex marriage and ordaining gay pastors. — Leaders of the United Methodist Church are holding their first international conference in nearly a decade this week, tackling such divisive issues as gay marriage, ordaining LGBTQ pastors and a dwindling membership. Progressives and many centrists supported regionalization, while traditionalists opposed the plan. Part of that divide is related to regionalization’s potential to allow the American church to move in a more LGBTQ-affirming direction, while allowing regional bodies outside the U.S. to maintain more traditional policy positions. With Wednesday’s decision to remove the ordination ban, “there’s an aspect of people finally seeing the goodness in the whole person,” said Cox.

She was credited on the records as CMC (her initials) as it was her first foray into pop music. The song reached number three in the UK Singles Chart, Church's second highest-charting single and Vries' highest. In 2001, Church added more pop, swing, and Broadway with her album Enchantment. That year, Church made her first film appearance in the 2001 Ron Howard film A Beautiful Mind. Celine Dion was beginning a concert engagement in Las Vegas and was not available to perform the film's end title song, "All Love Can Be", so composer James Horner enlisted Church and the song was rewritten for her vocal range.

It felt like it really was a safe place I could ask questions, which I was encouraged to do. People knew each other, clearly, but I felt so welcome. So much so that I actually gave my real name before I logged off vs. just 'guest'. I actually can't remember the last time I went somewhere in real life and felt that welcome. I came with zero expectations and I left with a lot of reasons to come back.

About one-quarter of U.S. congregations left between 2019 and 2023, mostly conservative churches dismayed that the denomination wasn’t enforcing its longstanding LGBTQ bans. With the absence of many conservative delegates, who had been in the solid majority in previous general conferences and had steadily reinforced such bans over the decades, progressive delegates are moving quickly to reverse such policies. The 700-plus delegates approved all eight regionalization-related petitions starting last week, when the body voted on a constitutional amendment that still requires ratification by United Methodist regional conferences. Cox already pastors a church in Columbus, but her inability to receive ordination credentials is both a symbolic gesture against her personhood and a limit on her participation in United Methodist life. For example, she's unable to serve as a clergy delegate in the regional legislative assembly or at the UMC General Conference.

House of Representatives: Definition, Facts, History

length of term for house of representatives

Given the shortcomings of the government created by the Articles of Confederation, the framers soon realized that a bicameral legislature at the national level would foster a more representative central government. As outlined in the Constitution, the House represents citizens based on district populations, while the Senate represents citizens on an equal state basis. This agreement was part of what is called The Great Compromise which, in turn, led to the Permanent Seat of Government Act establishing the nation’s federal capital in Washington, DC. It moved to Philadelphia in 1790 and then to Washington, DC, in 1800. The Committee on Ethics has jurisdiction over the rules and statutes governing the conduct of members, officers and employees while performing their official duties.

Leadership

Each state's gubernatorial term limits are prescribed by its state constitution, with the exception of Wyoming, whose limits are found in its statutes. Territorial term limits are prescribed by its constitution in the Northern Mariana Islands, the Organic Acts in Guam and the U.S. The majority party members and the minority party members meet in separate caucuses to select their leader. Third parties rarely have had enough members to elect their own leadership, and independents will generally join one of the larger party organizations to receive committee assignments. To regain control of the House, Democrats needed a pick-up of 15 seats.

Exploring the length of terms for members of Congress and its implications.

In 2007, Larry J. Sabato revived the debate over term limits by arguing in A More Perfect Constitution that the success and popularity of term limits at the state level suggests that they should be adopted at the federal level as well. He specifically put forth the idea of congressional term limits and suggested a national constitutional convention be used to accomplish the amendment, since the Congress would be unlikely to propose and adopt any amendment that limits its own power. The term length for Congress members is important in that it allows the citizens of the United States to decide who should represent them in the legislature. This system of term limits helps to ensure that elected officials remain accountable to the people and that the government remains representative of the people. In the world of American politics, the length of a term in Congress is a topic of great interest and debate.

The number of representatives with full voting rights is 435, a number set by Public Law 62-5 on August 8, 1911, and in effect since 1913. The number of representatives per state is proportionate to population. The late 19th and early 20th centuries also saw a dramatic increase in the power of the speaker of the House. The rise of the speaker's influence began in the 1890s, during the tenure of Republican Thomas Brackett Reed.

More House History

A further dominating element of House organization is the committee system, under which the membership is divided into specialized groups for purposes such as holding hearings, preparing bills for the consideration of the entire House, and regulating House procedure. Almost all bills are first referred to a committee, and ordinarily the full House cannot act on a bill until the committee has “reported” it for floor action. There are approximately 20 standing (permanent) committees, organized mainly around major policy areas, each having staffs, budgets, and subcommittees. They may hold hearings on questions of public interest, propose legislation that has not been formally introduced as a bill or resolution, and conduct investigations. Among important standing committees are those on appropriations, on ways and means (which handles matters related to finance), and on rules.

Rep. Jeff Myers, R-Warrenton, pointed out that many lobbyists thrive off of the turnover in legislators. Since lobbyists have no limit on how long they can work in their positions, they have more institutional knowledge and influence in Jefferson City than freshman lawmakers. Age has become a focal point on Capitol Hill in addition to the presidential campaign trail. Democrat Dianne Feinstein of California, who died in September at age 90, had been the Senate’s oldest member. And Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, an 81-year-old Kentucky Republican, has faced a series of recent health scares.

It determines how long lawmakers can serve before seeking reelection and shapes the composition of the legislative branch. Understanding the length of terms in Congress provides insight into the motivations of politicians and the potential for continuity or change within the government. It is an essential aspect of American democracy that continues to be debated and scrutinized.

The speaker is the presiding officer of the House but does not preside over every debate. Instead, they delegate the responsibility of presiding to other members in most cases. The presiding officer sits in a chair in the front of the House chamber.

Two additional representatives were added temporarily after the admission of Alaska and Hawaii as states in 1959, but at the next legislative apportionment, membership returned to 435, the number authorized by a law enacted in 1941. Representatives and delegates serve for two-year terms, while a resident commissioner (a kind of delegate) serves for four years. The U.S. Constitution requires that vacancies in the House be filled with a special election. The term of the replacement member expires on the date that the original member's would have expired. Under Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution, seats in the House of Representatives are apportioned among the states by population, as determined by the census conducted every ten years.

From 1910 to 1975 committee and subcommittee chairmanship was determined purely by seniority; members of Congress sometimes had to wait 30 years to get one, but their chairship was independent of party leadership. The rules were changed in 1975 to permit party caucuses to elect chairs, shifting power upward to the party leaders. In 1995, Republicans under Newt Gingrich set a limit of three two-year terms for committee chairs.

The average age of Congress is rising, with the current class of lawmakers being one of the oldest in history. This trend raises concerns about the representation of younger generations and the ability of Congress to address evolving societal needs. Senators are elected to six year terms and may be reelected indefinitely. Congress is to limit the total amount of time a senator may serve to a lifetime 12-years and house reps to a lifetime of 6-years. The total amount of time they would be permitted to serve is 18-years of their lifetime.

The speaker chooses the chairs of standing committees, appoints most of the members of the Rules Committee, appoints all members of conference committees, and determines which committees consider bills. Representatives are usually identified in the media and other sources by party and state, and sometimes by congressional district, or a major city or community within their district. For example, Democratic representative Nancy Pelosi, who represents California's 11th congressional district within San Francisco, may be identified as "D–California", "D–California–11" or "D–San Francisco". States entitled to more than one representative are divided into single-member districts. This has been a federal statutory requirement since 1967 pursuant to the act titled An Act For the relief of Doctor Ricardo Vallejo Samala and to provide for congressional redistricting.[18] Before that law, general ticket representation was used by some states.

Other lawmakers pointed to the importance of knowing the history of past legislation that has been considered by the Missouri House or Senate, arguing that knowledge of what killed a bill in the past is crucial in advancing it in the future. The Center’s new survey comes as Democratic President Joe Biden, who turns 81 in November, plans to run for reelection next year. His predecessor in the White House, 77-year-old Donald Trump, is running for the Republican nomination. A victory next November would make either man the oldest person ever elected U.S. president. Furthermore, Congress has the ability to create policies that protect the American people from long-term threats, such as national security risks or climate change.

He did try to win the 1880 nomination but was defeated in part because of popular anti-third-term sentiment.[28] Theodore Roosevelt had already served over seven years and in 1912, after a four-year hiatus, ran for a third term. He was violently criticized and almost killed by John Flammang Schrank for doing so.[29] The 1912 election was ultimately won by Woodrow Wilson. The dynamics of Congress, with its different term lengths and intricate decision-making processes, impact the legislative landscape and the nation as a whole. Understanding the duration of lawmakers' service is crucial in comprehending the functioning of the legislative branch.

For a thorough explanation of the legislation process, please see the How a Bill Becomes a Law section on the House website. In addition, I am also available to help you if you are experiencing difficulties dealing with a federal agency. To help answer those questions, I have put together a list of Frequently Asked Questions about the U.S.

After a census is taken (in a year ending in 0), the year ending in 2 is the first year in which elections for U.S. House districts are based on that census (with the Congress based on those districts starting its term on the following January 3). As there is no legislation at the federal level mandating one particular system for elections to the House, systems are set at the state level.

This bill is important in that it helps to ensure that the United States is not inadvertently arming hostile forces. Congress also has the power to pass laws that have an impact on the nation. For instance, Congress recently considered a bill that would make TikTok, a popular social media app, illegal in the United States.

Power is nowhere concentrated; it is rather deliberately and of set policy scattered amongst many small chiefs. It is divided up, as it were, into forty-seven seigniories, in each of which a Standing Committee is the court-baron and its chairman lord-proprietor. These petty barons, some of them not a little powerful, but none of them within the reach of the full powers of rule, may at will exercise almost despotic sway within their own shires, and may sometimes threaten to convulse even the realm itself. The chaplain leads the House in prayer at the opening of the day.

The makeup of the Rules Committee has traditionally been weighted in favor of the majority party, and has been in its current configuration of 9 majority and 4 minority members since the late 1970s. The ranking member leads the minority members of the committee. The House will sometimes form a special or select committee for a short time period and specific purpose, frequently an investigation. All committees have websites where they post information about the legislation they are drafting. Go to the Clerk’s site for more information about representatives. To be elected, a representative must be at least 25 years old, a United States citizen for at least seven years and an inhabitant of the state he or she represents.

The House’s standing committees have different legislative jurisdictions. Each considers bills and issues and recommends measures for consideration by the House. Committees also have oversight responsibilities to monitor agencies, programs, and activities within their jurisdictions, and in some cases in areas that cut across committee jurisdictions. After extensive debate, the framers of the Constitution agreed to create the House with representation based on population and the Senate with equal representation. This agreement was part of what is referred to as The Great Compromise.

The so-called bicameral—from the Latin term for “two chambers”—legislature was created by the framers of the U.S. But it’s important to note that this was not the first format established by the framers for the federal government. It’s a little over two hours northwest of Charlotte, and you’ll pass Boone on the way there. The park sits on more than 4,000 acres, and Elk Knob itself is about 5,500 feet tall, making it one of the higher peaks in the Boone area. It doesn’t have as many trails as other parks, but it makes up for that in the hiking experience. In addition to a two-mile uphill hike to the summit for a nice view, hikers can also take an easier stroll through the woods to reach the headwaters of the North Fork of the New River.

Sure, western North Carolina steals the show when it comes to mountains, but that doesn’t mean the area of east Charlotte is without its fun. Morrow Mountain State Park, about an hour from Charlotte in Albemarle, is named after one of the tallest peaks in the Uwharrie Mountains at just over 900 feet. Here are some suggestions for hikes within day-trip distance of Charlotte, including favorites from listeners who responded when we asked on social media. It’s worth pointing out that this is nowhere near an exhaustive list of hiking trails.

Summertime is a fantastic time for a road trip, with the windows down for some fresh air and your favorite Spotify playlist turned up. Today, I'm walking through four underrated spots within a four-hour drive from Charlotte. With less than an inch of annual snowfall, the city isn't exactly a winter wonderland, but it is within close driving distance to the mountains and winter sporting activities.

However, with Wilmington just a few miles away and plenty of public access points, you can also find lodging in town without sacrificing beach access. Those interested in WWII history can also explore the Battleship North Carolina, docked along the Cape Fear River. Late December through early March are Charlotte's coldest months, with highs in the low 50s F and lows hovering around freezing. Christmas through January is a quiet time in the city, with fewer tourists, cheaper flights, and lower hotel fares.

Spring has average highs ranging from 59 degrees F (15 degrees C) in March to a warm 81 degrees F (27 degrees C) in May, with low temperatures comfortably above freezing. Note that there are frequent rain showers in the spring, so come prepared with a rain jacket and waterproof shoes. Summers are hot and humid, with temperatures soaring to 90 degrees F (32 degrees C) frequently. But it's also a great time to take advantage of the area's water-based activities, like kayaking, paddle boarding, and swimming.

Located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina and in the southern part of the state, Charlotte has a humid, continental climate. It's proximity to the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean does create some unpredictable weather patterns, but in general, temperatures are moderate year-round. The annual high temperature is 71 degrees F (22 degrees C), while the average low temperature is 49 degrees F (9 degrees C). Toward the end of September and into October, the leaves in the mountains turn beautiful shades of yellow, orange and red. Since it's in the Blue Ridge Mountains, it's also perfect for skiers and snowboarders looking for a closer getaway than western spots like Vail. North Carolina has trails nearly everyone can enjoy — whether you’re a longtime outdoor enthusiast, someone who got into hiking during the pandemic or a newcomer looking to explore.

Note that hotel rates are at their highest during the season and you may fight crowds for popular destinations, so buy your tickets and make your dinner reservations in advance. Also plan on packing layers, as evenings can be quite chilly, especially in the earlier part of the season. It covers 52,000 acres, including the Birkhead Mountains Wilderness, a 5,100-acre wilderness that has what the U.S. Forest Service describes as possibly the oldest mountains in North America. Uwharrie forest is also home to Badin Lake Recreation Area, a popular spot with access to roughly 40 miles of trails ranging from easy to difficult. Crowders Mountain State Park is kind of the hiking spot for the Charlotte region — for good reason.

charlotte to high point nc

There are about 40 miles worth of trails to explore and some great waterfall views. Be warned, there’s some elevation here, so expect more strenuous hiking than in the Charlotte area. Grandfather Mountain State Park is one of North Carolina’s most iconic hiking spots. It’s also home to some of its toughest hiking — think rugged terrain with the occasional ladder or cable. It’s a little over two hours northwest of Charlotte, but keep in mind that the terrain on some trails here might make for a slower-than-usual pace, so arrive early if you’re only hoping for a day hike. (For example, the Grandfather Trail takes hikers up and down 1,872 feet over just two and a half miles.) The state park is free, but there’s also a paid area with access to the Mile High Swinging Bridge.

Charlotte's craft breweries, art museums, public parks, recreational activities, and varied neighborhoods make it a year-round destination, with over 50 million visitors annually. Compared to most of the country, the weather is tolerable 12 months out of the year. Fall is also a great time to visit the city, with parks in all their splendor, ideal temperatures, fewer crowds, plenty of outdoor festivals, and options for short getaways to the nearby mountains. South Mountains State Park is about one hour and 15 minutes northwest of Charlotte, in Burke County. The park sits on roughly 20,00 acres, and it’s a good in-between hiking area before getting to some of the state’s higher peaks.

While those are popular spots, I've always been a bigger fan of Wrightsville Beach. The water is cleaner and the beaches a little less crowded than Myrtle, and it's a much closer drive than the Outer Banks. It's a short two-hour drive from Charlotte, and it has pretty much everything you could want from a quiet weekend getaway.

Fall marks another ideal time to visit Charlotte, as temperatures cool off, family travelers retreat for the school year, and hotel prices come down from spring and summer rates. If you're looking for fall foliage or a side trip to the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains or mountain towns like Asheville, plan on visiting from mid- to late October to see the leaves at their peak. In Charlotte proper, you can expect comfortable temperatures in the 60s and 70s F for most of the season and lots of fall-themed events. With ideal temperatures and highs in the 60s and the upper 70s F, the entire city in bloom, and outdoor and other attractions operating on extended hours, spring is the perfect time to visit Charlotte.

Some cities and residents defied state rules requiring updates planning for growth and affordability, sparking lawsuits. A recent poll found that 4 in 10 state residents had thought about leaving, with about 55% of those surveyed expressing concerns about the costs of healthcare and housing. Prediction #6: Builders will focus on multifamily rentals

Rent control distorts the housing market by acting as a deterrent and disincentive for rental housing development and expedites the deterioration of existing housing stock. While inventory measures the number of homes currently available for sale, months of supply measures the amount of time it would take those homes to sell. Six months of housing supply is considered a healthy benchmark, with fewer than six indicating a seller’s market and more than six indicating a buyer’s market. In addition, people looking to buy or sell homes when the pandemic first hit played catch-up months later, so a flurry of activity took place starting in mid-2020.

Miami Housing Market: Prices, Trends & Forecasts

The pandemic homebuying boom depleted supply, which has only barely started to recover. Fresno is one of many inland California cities that has suffered from an influx of residents driving prices upward. The city many refer to as the capital of the Central Valley has an average home value that’s roughly $71,000 above its expected price, according to the FAU analysis.

Supply started dropping dramatically during the pandemic due to supply chain issues, rising demand, and a chronic lack of homebuilding. However, supply began inching upwards part way through 2022, as mortgage rates rose and fewer people entered the market. Importantly, mortgage rates fell noticeably before the end of the year due to inflation easing up, the Fed holding rates steady, and the labor market growing slower than expected. While interest rates aren’t predicted to fall until midway through next year (three rate drops are predicted in 2024), mortgage rates could continue to fall sooner. San Jose is at the very heart of Silicon Valley, and it has always been a pricey address. Thus, it’s in no way surprising that San Jose appears on a list of overpriced housing markets.

Housing Market Forecast for 2024

C.A.R. releases its 2024 California Housing Market ForecastCalifornia housing market will rebound in 2024 as mortgage rates ebb. Listing activity from investors is likely to be lower than the year before, but it won’t decline as much as new listings in the overall market. That’s because while many investors will choose to rent out homes rather than sell while the market is down, some need to offload inventory after buying sprees over the last two years. Construction of single-family homes surged during the pandemic, which means builders need to offload the homes they have on hand without adding more supply to limit their financial losses. They’ll pull back dramatically in some markets like Phoenix and Dallas, where they built too many homes in anticipation of demand that’s failing to materialize. If inflation cools faster than expected and the job market moderates, rates may decline sooner and/or more, dropping to 6% in the beginning of the year, then settling around 5.8% for the rest of the year.

Creating a Family Legacy Through Homeownership

I’m optimistic that 2023’s spring selling season will be a bright spot as levels of inflation get more under control. There will still be extreme demand as new construction just can’t get out of the ground fast enough, and the Millennial home buyers, who make up a huge demographic, are primed to make their move. According to a recent survey conducted by RE/MAX in partnership with SWNS Media Group, 84% of Gen Z, 79% of Millennials and 61% of survey respondents 77 or older plan to buy a house or condo in the next few years. In my opinion, 2023 will be a better year for housing than many people think, especially because we'll no longer have year-over-year comparisons to 2021 – an historic outlier that made 2022 seem less than what it really was. In January, luxury home sales fell a record 45% to their second-lowest level ever, continuing a rapid decline from 2022.

Following years of litigation, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) has agreed to pay $418 million to settle a series of antitrust lawsuits filed in 2019 on behalf of home sellers. Nonetheless, Kuba Jewgieniew, CEO of Realty ONE Group, a real estate brokerage company, is optimistic about a recovery this year.

Without the burden of daily commutes to work, people are able to live in more favorable locations. For now, the relative lack of homes for sale is a favorable factor for sellers. While inventory is increasing, the highest reading within the last five years was in January 2019 with four months of supply. If you’re in a financial position to buy a home you plan to live in for the long term, it won’t matter when you buy it because you will live in it through economic highs and lows. However, if you are looking to buy real estate as a short-term investment, it will come with more risk if you buy at the height before a recession. “Foreclosure activity is still only at about 60% of pre-pandemic levels … and isn't likely to be back to 2019 numbers until sometime in mid-to-late 2024,” says Sharga.

There were more real estate agents than homes for sale in the U.S. during the pandemic boom, but the ratio of agents to homes for sale has already begun to fall, and we expect tens of thousands of agents to leave the industry next year. This could push commissions up because the agents who remain will likely be able to charge higher percentages. On the other end of the spectrum, we expect prices to fall most in pandemic migration hotspots like Austin, Boise and Phoenix, largely because the huge increases over the last two years leave a lot of room for prices to decline. Expensive West Coast cities are also likely to see outsized price declines because of stumbling tech stocks and the shift to remote work pushing so many people out of those markets.

We expect disaster-insurance rates to continue rising next year (and beyond), rendering housing in some areas more expensive. In most situations, it’s better for homeowners to sell now instead of waiting because median sales prices are trending lower in many counties and major cities. While sellers in many counties are more likely to slash asking prices and see their homes remain longer on the market, buyer demand and prices should remain steady and will remain a seller’s market or a neutral market. After the median price increased 5.7% year-over-year to $831,500 in 2022, CAR estimates the statewide median price will dip to $758,600 in 2023 for an 8.8% decline. CAR forecasts an overall reduction in existing home sales and median prices for 2023. Our initial 2023 economic outlook anticipated slowing growth in both economic activity and hiring.

Renters facing a renewal should know that they’ve got more bargaining power this year and should carefully consider the prices of other nearby rental options when negotiating a lease renewal. Atlanta is expected to be a top real estate market to watch in 2023 and beyond. On the economic side, supply chain issues have begun to ease and will hopefully continue to in the year ahead. While jobs are steady, the labor market faces challenges in areas like construction, where workers are needed. Inflation is starting to show signs of easing, but any of those impacts are unlikely to be seen until the end of 2023. Home Affordability Report, property data provider Attom found that median-priced single-family homes remain less affordable than the historical average in over 95% of U.S. counties. Meanwhile, existing home prices continue to soar to unprecedented heights, reaching $384,500, which marks the eighth consecutive month of yearly price increases and a February median home price record. The rule is set to take effect in mid-July, once the settlement receives judge approval. Investor purchases plummeted by a record 48.6% year over year in the first three months of 2023, which followed a 46.2% fall at the end of 2022. Both drops exceeded the previous 45.1% record fall during the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis. (Investor purchase records date back to 2000.) However, investor market share remained relatively stable throughout the year, hovering around 17%, below last year’s 19%.

Whichever side of the transaction you’re on, working with an experienced local real estate agent can help you navigate the market more successfully. Currently, there is an equivalent of 3.3 months' supply of existing homes available for sale, according to NAR. That’s primarily because homes won’t be selling as fast, rather than due to sellers bringing new listings to the market. High mortgage rates combined with high home prices have made a home purchase much less affordable this year as monthly payments increased by more than 50%. In November 2022, home prices were up 2.6 percent from November 2021, while sales were down 35.1 percent during the same period, the largest drop in a decade, according to Redfin. A healthy housing market usually has four to five months supply; in November, the country had a 3.3 month supply of homes, according to the National Association of Realtors.
