(WBTV/Gray News) — Four law enforcement officers were killed, and four others were wounded while trying to serve an arrest warrant in a neighborhood in Charlotte. We must do more to protect our law enforcement officers. That means funding them - so they have the resources they need to do their jobs and keep us safe. And it means taking additional action to combat the scourge of gun violence. Leaders in Congress need to step up so that we ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, require safe storage of guns, and pass universal background checks and a national red flag law. Elliott was one of four law enforcement officers killed Monday as they attempted to serve a warrant at a home in east Charlotte.

Wilson described the scene as “gunfire galore,” with officers army-crawling through his backyard, hiding behind trees, and jumping around bushes. Wilson said the people who lived in the home involved in the incident had lived there for “a year and change” but otherwise didn’t know them. They occasionally had backyard parties, Wilson said. At one point, Wilson said he saw one officer dragged through his home by his shoulders.

Grandfather Mountain State Park is one of North Carolina’s most iconic hiking spots. It’s also home to some of its toughest hiking — think rugged terrain with the occasional ladder or cable. It’s a little over two hours northwest of Charlotte, but keep in mind that the terrain on some trails here might make for a slower-than-usual pace, so arrive early if you’re only hoping for a day hike. (For example, the Grandfather Trail takes hikers up and down 1,872 feet over just two and a half miles.) The state park is free, but there’s also a paid area with access to the Mile High Swinging Bridge.
Charlotte's craft breweries, art museums, public parks, recreational activities, and varied neighborhoods make it a year-round destination, with over 50 million visitors annually. Compared to most of the country, the weather is tolerable 12 months out of the year. Fall is also a great time to visit the city, with parks in all their splendor, ideal temperatures, fewer crowds, plenty of outdoor festivals, and options for short getaways to the nearby mountains. While those are popular spots, I've always been a bigger fan of Wrightsville Beach. The water is cleaner and the beaches a little less crowded than Myrtle, and it's a much closer drive than the Outer Banks. It's a short two-hour drive from Charlotte, and it has pretty much everything you could want from a quiet weekend getaway.
Fall marks another ideal time to visit Charlotte, as temperatures cool off, family travelers retreat for the school year, and hotel prices come down from spring and summer rates. If you're looking for fall foliage or a side trip to the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains or mountain towns like Asheville, plan on visiting from mid- to late October to see the leaves at their peak. In Charlotte proper, you can expect comfortable temperatures in the 60s and 70s F for most of the season and lots of fall-themed events. With ideal temperatures and highs in the 60s and the upper 70s F, the entire city in bloom, and outdoor and other attractions operating on extended hours, spring is the perfect time to visit Charlotte.
